Want are User Journeys and how can you create one? In this UX tutorial for beginners, I show you.
A User Journey is a series of steps which map out how a user might interact with the a product or service you are designing. This could cover how a user might go from landing on your website homepage to the checkout page of your site so they can purchase something, and all the steps in between
Typically user journeys can be used in two distinct ways -
1. To map out how a user currently interacts with a product or service
2. To map out how a user could interact with a product or service
Using a User Journey to analyse how a user currently interacts with a product or service is great for understanding what works well and what doesn’t with current workflows
Using a Journey to analyse how a user could interact with a product or service is a great way to ensure what we are designing is consistent with the tasks and goals a user might have
A User Journey doesn’t have to follow a particular format or template and there’s a variety of ways you can communicate the journey. As long as it’s clear what the context of the journey is and the relation between each of the steps.
Defining a user journey:
Context - Where is the user? What’s going on around them?
Sequence - What are the linear steps of the process to achieve their goal(s)?
Functionality - What functionality is required for each of the steps?
Devices and technology - What devices are they using?
