Now when it comes to Zach Wilson, it’s that play-making ability that does get you really excited. He made some truly amazing throws. It happened at least once a game where I was completely blown away by what he did on the field.
Going back to BYU, this offense is based on the zone stretch running game paired with play-action that we have known to love. If you watched my last two videos on Shane Waldron then you know exactly the type of plays this offense runs. Not only is it commonly used in the NFL, but it’s also used in the college and high school ranks too. It’s a really good scheme.
The thing that you need to know about BYU though is that they were a power house in their division this past year. Their offensive line was dominant. Their wide receivers were better than everyone they faced, and simply put, these combined to consistently open up massive holes in opposing defenses. It was big play after big play and Zach Wilson made huge throws all over the field.
Generally speaking, and while Zach Wilson does have things to work on, it’s the little things that I really like about him. He throws a good spiral. His passes are typically at chest height. He can adjust his arm angle to make every throw. And he just seems like he’s a really well coached player.
What impressed me as I went through his film was also how much he improved over the course of the season. The mistakes he made earlier didn’t happen as the season went on. He was much better to end the year than to start it which shows how much he developed. I think this is a great quality to see.
Now for Zach Wilson's pro comparison, I'm going to use Josh Allen. While Wilson doesn't have the size or the arm strength, he has better accuracy and the same off-script playmaking ability. I think he has a similar upside.
For my NFL Draft Grade: I gave Wilson a Top 3 grade. I think he's well worth one of the top picks in the NFL Draft and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he went #2 overall to the New York Jets.
