Steve Cowan: A Fancy by John Dowland

Steve Cowan: A Fancy by John Dowland
Steve Cowan is quickly rising as a compelling performer amongst the new generation of guitarists. Top prizes in several competitions have led him to concert appearances throughout Canada and the U.S., where he has been praised for his powerful sound, insightful interpretations, and unique repertoire choice. Steve composes original works for guitar and is always seeking out lesser-known pieces to present to his audience.

Steve grew up as a self-taught percussionist and electric guitarist in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He was introduced to the world of classical guitar at the age of 18 when he began studies with Sylvie Proulx at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He continued his studies at the Master’s level with David Leisner at the Manhattan School of Music, where he was the 2012 recipient of the Andres Segovia/Rose Augustine award.

International awards include first prizes at Guitare Montréal (2015). the Wilson Center Guitar Festival and Competition (2014), and Boston GuitarFest (2013). These wins came on the heels of another significant accomplishment, when he took first place in guitar at the FCMF National Music Festival in 2012, as well as the Grand Award while competing against all other classical music categories in the final gala concert.

Steve’s solo and group performances have been featured on numerous CBC radio and television programs that showcase musical talent from across Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently lives in Montréal where he is an active performer and teacher, and is working on his Doctoral studies with Jérôme Ducharme at McGill University.

Steve Cowan plays on a 2010 Bruno Boutin guitar.
