Gingerbread House Recipe
INGREDIENTS
HOUSE
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
3 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp kosher salt
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup molasses
ROYAL ICING
4 large egg whites
1 tsp cream of tartar (not tartar sauce)
6 cups powdered sugar, sifted
Water, as needed
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt. Grease the bottom and sides of a heavy-bottomed pot with nonstick spray. Melt the shortening in the greased pot over medium heat. Add the molasses and sugar, bring to a boil, then turn off the heat. Gradually stir in 4 cups of the flour mixture, 1 cup at a time, until fully incorporated.
Dust a work surface with flour. Carefully turn the dough out onto the floured surface and work in the flour mixture. Once the flour is incorporated, shape the dough into a 12-inch log and cut into portions for your house elements. Roll out the pieces of dough to about ½-inch thick and set on a prepared baking sheet, spacing about 1 inch apart as the dough will expand while baking. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until they have hardened and baked through. Let cool completely.
Make the royal icing: In a large bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar with an electric mixer until frothy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until the icing is smooth and thick.
Assemble, decorate, and enjoy!
