Labor invited think tank to ‘enforce some kind of ideological conformity’ on China

Labor invited think tank to ‘enforce some kind of ideological conformity’ on China Amid revelations a pro-China think-tank criticised Labor MPs for speaking out against China at a Shadow Cabinet meeting, former Labor MP Michael Danby says it is “not appropriate … to be making comments on Labor Party ideological differences”.

Sky News host Sharri Markson has revealed, only a day after the federal government withdrew funding for a think tank called ‘China Matters’, the Labor leadership team invited its director, Allan Gyngell, to speak to Shadow Cabinet.

Ms Markson reported there is growing concern among Labor MPs that their “free speech is being curtailed” as Mr Gygnall allegedly criticised members who are vocal against China for “causing unnecessary provocation to a complex relationship already in trouble”.

Mr Danby said the Labor MPs who have recently been publicly critical of the Chinese regime in recent months are “perfectly entitled” to do so especially when they “stand up” for Uyghurs in concentration camps, or against the actions of the government in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

“It’s not appropriate for people to come along and try and enforce some kind of ideological conformity”.
